San Lazaro Cafeteria in Hialeah stands out as a spot where local workers and neighbors gather for straightforward, no-frills meals paired with a familiar, relaxed atmosphere. This isn’t your polished café or trendy brunch spot—it feels more like a time capsule from another era, where the focus is genuinely on good food, affordable drinks, and a dependable place to unwind.

Located on W 2nd Ave, San Lazaro caters mostly to early risers and day laborers looking to fuel up or take a break without breaking the bank. The breakfast offerings start early—around 8 a.m.—with hearty plates served alongside classic Cuban coffee like Café Pilon, brewed just how locals remember it. You’ll often hear the murmur of conversation mixed with the clack of billiards balls, as this spot doubles as a neighborhood hangout for beer and billiards in the afternoons.

The staff and owner bring a warm familiarity to the experience, making it clear that this place is built on community ties rather than flashy marketing. Prices stay reasonable, including specials on beer and wine, which keeps the place bustling well beyond breakfast hours. The interior has a lived-in feel, with details that might remind visitors of an old Havana movie set—somewhere gritty but full of character. Don’t let the rough-around-the-edges look fool you; the charm lies in its authenticity and steady crowd of regulars.

This cafeteria feels best visited when you’re looking for no-nonsense, tasty Cuban-influenced food and a spot to rest during a busy day in Hialeah. If you enjoy straightforward local joints where the vibe is casual and the service is friendly, San Lazaro is well worth making a quick trip for, especially in the mornings or early evenings. It’s the kind of place where a dollar in the “vaca” jar on your way out is part of the routine, signaling a neighborhood spot that thrives on local goodwill and familiarity.

Neighborhood joint for beer and billiards with breakfast at 8am. Out of an old Havana movie. Put a dollar in San Lazato"s "vaca" before you leave. Cafe Pilon brewed to perfection.Full breakfast $6. You might find recommended in Michelin...not the Guide, the tire store down the street. Looks rough at first but good food and charm. Kevlar optional.
